NET began through student evangelism at the University of Nairobi and grew into a movement serving students, churches, leaders, and communities across Kenya. This is the story of how it happened, who carried it forward, and why the mission continues.
WHY NET BEGAN
The calling behind the movement.
In 1980, a group of students at the University of Nairobi Main Campus felt God calling them to reach beyond their own community. They had experienced the transforming power of the gospel in their own lives, and they believed students across Kenya needed the same encounter.
What began as informal outreach to nearby campuses quickly grew into something none of them had imagined. They called it the Nyanza Evangelistic Team, a name that reflected their original focus on reaching the then Nyanza Region with the gospel of Jesus Christ.
The students partnered with the Evangelical Fellowship of Kenya (EFK, now EAK) and established relationships with local churches who shared their vision for campus evangelism. These early partnerships formed the foundation for what would become a nationwide movement.
As the ministry grew beyond the original campus and region, the name evolved. But the calling remained the same: reaching students with the gospel, equipping them for leadership, and sending them to transform their communities. Today, that calling continues through NET Ministries Trust.

THE MOVEMENT THROUGH THE YEARS

1980
The Beginning
NET was established as the Nyanza Evangelistic Team by students at the University of Nairobi Main Campus, with a heart to reach the Nyanza Region with the gospel of Jesus Christ.
1983 – 1989
First Leadership
Dr. John Ochieng Ogada and Ochieng’ Okinyo Oloo (The Late) served as the first chairpersons, establishing the foundation of the movement and setting the tone for a ministry built on prayer and evangelism.
1989 – 1999
Growth & Expansion
Under successive chairpersons, NET expanded its reach across campuses and communities. New branches were established, and the ministry’s reputation for faithful evangelism grew throughout the region.
2000s
Trust Registration
In response to growth and increasing demands of ministry, NET was registered as a Trust under the name NET Ministries Trust, with the slogan “Responding To God’s Call.” Leadership continued through Mr. Maurice Nyakiti, Mr. Tom Warega, and Mr. Johnson Awuor.
2010s
Continued Mission
Under Mr. Matthias Ohana and Pst. Kenyanito Dudi, NET continued to strengthen its presence across Kenya, equipping students and leaders for evangelism and discipleship.
2023 – Present
Today & Beyond
Under the current chairmanship of Mr. Fred Wambia, NET Ministries Trust continues to grow. Students are searching for meaning, community, and truth. NET exists to meet them where they are, with the gospel that changes lives.
